Journal #219 – Feeling better today

I tried to sleep earlier last night and I woke up feeling slightly better. I went to work following my usual routine and I made a choice to get a venti-sized Americano.

In hindsight, that coffee definitely helped to make me feel better. I suppose it was because of my body’s dependency on it and I was suffering somehow from insufficient amounts. I’m just not sure if that’s a good thing at all.

With me feeling better, I was able to be slightly more productive. So with that, I focus on testing some of the important stuff like NTLM/Kerberos authentication again for computers not joined to the domain. Managed to confirm that NTLM authentication works. Well you see, yesterday we had an issue where our application couldn’t be logged on from a computer not joined to the domain.

I also went about fixing some bugs that I found. And I also encountered an issue where the application couldn’t be started after being compiled. Turns out there was an issue with the asynchronous operations. Certain data were not loaded from the server.

My colleague and I had a discussion about that because some of the asynchronous operation was done by her. We went back and forth until we found a decent solution.

Then our conversation somehow became about multi-tasking. I simply told her that I’m not someone who does multi-tasking anymore because it prevents me from delivering quality work. It also overwhelms me rather easily and I hated that feeling. In a way, it also cause me to suffer from insomnia. I know I could train myself to handle it better but at the end of it, it is still a trade off. Since I value quality more than productivity, I rather be hyper-focus in what I was doing instead of switching context. It’s up to my colleagues to be understanding about that and let me do my work while they do theirs.

Later in the afternoon, my colleagues and I went and discuss about the testing process and the internal testing document that we will use. Our manager actually did called up our team leader and talk about the importance of the testing and the document to prove that we did test. We spent some time to prepare the document template and when it is ready, we packed up and went home.

Well, it’s Friday. No need to stay any longer than we have to. My colleagues’ priorities are their family. Mine is my mental health and my writing.

For me, once I reached home I went for a shower and got down to watch some tv shows like Supernatural, Seal Team and Arrow. Now that I’m done with all the shows for tonight, I suppose I shall do something else.

That’s all for now.

Journal #130 – Love-hate relationship with Monday

Sometimes I hate Mondays and there are times when I love it. It really depends on what’s my mood and my feeling about work that day.

Put it this way. If the task that I need to do on Monday is something that I would enjoy, I look forward to it. But if it’s something I dread or have no interest in doing, I feel the Monday’s blue. And there are days when I feel the Monday’s blue because I’m burn out from work or that there’s something else that I want to do.

And today is enjoyable Monday.

My day started at around 0750hrs but I chose to lay in bed for a while until about 0800hrs before I got up. Went through my morning routine, put on a pair of black sweat pants and navy blue t-shirt, and out of the house I went.

My mom went to Genting earlier today and will only be back on Wednesday. Since there won’t anyone at home until evening, I spent some time to power off everything except the fridge. The reason is very simple; fear of electrical fire. I have seen enough news about electrical devices or appliance just bursting into flames.

At work, I did some major code-refactoring and feature implementation.

My code refactoring was mostly about shuffling classes around so that they make sense in terms of subdomains.

Ever since I got exposed to domain driven design a year and a half ago, my favorite way of packaging my Java classes is that of the one used by the Cargo Example. The top four main packages, interfaces, domain, application, and infrastructure help to me easily identify the purpose of the classes. Going further down the packages, they represented the subdomains.

But until today, I still have some trouble sorting the classes properly because I know I don’t have enough experience and I’m dealing with a legacy system. Whatever domain knowledge that I had about the system I’m working on were mostly rusty. Two, I have the tendency of second-guessing myself, and is unable to justify why certain classes have to go into certain packages.

At around 1700hrs, I decided to call it a day and packed up. I went home and reached home at around 1815hrs. Had a quick shower and then I went about vacuuming the floor, and keeping the washing machine’s outlet pipe, after draining it dry, once the spin cycle completed.

Then I waited for my dinner and ate it while watching Game of Thrones. I love how some of the characters came a full circle but then I don’t quite remember everything about the show. To me, there are more important things in life than remembering what happened in first few seasons of a TV series. Like for example, building up my personal brand and doing writing.

23So next, I shall focus on watching The Strain before moving on to watch some YouTube video.

Here I conclude my journal for today.

Daily Journal – Aug 11, 2017

This is my 127th journal.

Despite me sleeping at around 0200hrs, I set the alarm clock to wake me up at 0730 hrs this morning. I intended to go to my client’s office to do some more work.

I spent one quarter of my time in the client’s office doing research into domain-driven design and the rest doing code refactoring and implementation.

My activity for today aside, I noticed that I no longer have the desire to spent the next few years of my life doing software development. I don’t even feel like doing any software work now except for the sake of money. Concurrently, I’m putting my plans into action and moving myself into the creative line of work.

Anyway, I left the client’s office at around 1710hrs and went to Uniqlo @ Jurong Point. Decided to get two plain-colored T-shirts and a black sweat pants.

These are part of my minimalistic lifestyle and serve as my uniform.

I got home at around 1830hrs, showered, and waited for dinner. In the meantime, I was looking for courses on Creative Writing, and career opportunities that are not related to software development. Yes, I want to try something else now and seeing it as a career change.

After dinner, I watched season 3, episode 7 of Zoo (TV Series).

I will probably go to bed early today as I need to wake up early tomorrow for a drone piloting course that starts at 9am sharp and ends at 6pm. I will do my best to prepare the journal for tomorrow with photos and videos.

That’s all for now.

Here I conclude my journal for today.

Daily Journal – Aug 5, 2017

This is my 121st journal.

I didn’t do much today except spending most of my waking hours playing Cities: Skylines. I managed to fix the traffic issues and got my city population growing again. Tax income has now stabilized and that the commercial zones can get their goods now. What I did was simple. Creating a cargo train network that spanned the whole city with support from cargo ships.

Later in the evening, I went for a 8km run. Wanted to do 10km but then I felt that I should let my joints recover as they still hurts when I run. I still hadn’t got around to get the new shoes yet as I have some budget constraint this month. I mean, I didn’t quite want to spend the money since I’m technically not employed full-time.

Had my dinner and off I went to watch Dark Matter (TV Series) and Killjoys (TV Series).

That’s all for now.

Here I conclude my journal for today.

Daily Journal – Aug 2, 2017

This is my 118th journal.

0915hrs and I’m already kind of awake. Went to the washroom for a bit and then back to bed. Didn’t quite fall asleep but more like just lazing around until around 1015hrs.

Today, I won’t be going to my client’s office to do any work because I got a doctor’s appointment later in the afternoon. I’m required to fast for 6 hours because it’s endoscopy. So I’m here feeling hungry. And you know what’s the best part? I was already feeling hungry since last night 2330hrs and I just tried to go to bed with an empty stomach. I think I managed to fall as sleep at around 0230hrs in the morning or so. Can’t really remember except for the extremely gassy stomach.

Didn’t really have anything planned for today. So I think I will do something light for the until the doctor’s appointment. I mean isn’t that what I have been doing for the past week? Hah.

Here is a video that I was watching while writing the journal.

It is Lorde singing Green Light live on SNL. I always enjoyed her performance because she has a unique personality when performing. She simply just be herself.

Next, I went to watch a video from the channel Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows. It’s a very interesting channel that talks about concepts or experiences that we had but didn’t quite have the vocabulary to describe it.

The video is titled Morii: The Desire to Capture a Fleeting Experience.

Fasting. I may have done it wrong but what’s done is done. I’m feeling so sleepy, which I think can be safely attributed to drop in blood sugar. I’m feeling thirsty, had a mild headache, and I hadn’t drank anything since last night, 2330hrs. An hour or so more to go before I leave for the hospital. I think I will just go and sleep again.

Went out of the house at around 1330hrs and arrived at the NUH Endoscopy Center at around 1430hrs, registered myself and waited for don’t know how long.

After waiting for a while, the doctor got my consent to perform the endoscopy procedure. Before long, I was in.

Went through the preparation work and before I knew it, it was done. Initially, it wasn’t so bad. They did give me some sedation but I was pretty awake for the whole process. I still remember the doctor talking about taking samples, telling the nurse how to guide the tube around, etc. When it’s time for the tube to come out, the whole process triggered a series of gag reflex of wanting to vomit. When it’s finally out, my throat actually hurts, felt swollen.

Then they wheeled me to the recovery ward and waited for an hour. Took my blood pressure and monitor my condition. Nothing major happened and I was up.

Had some cream cracker and a cup of milo. Then see the nurse whom gave me the preliminary report, told me that they took some biopsy and did some testing of the samples. The diagnosis was Erosive Gastritis of the lower stomach (Antral). She also told me to wait for the call tomorrow if the samples revealed that it was some kind of infection and I would need to go back there to get the meds. For now, they just gave some meds to deal with the excessive acid and let the lining heal.

Had dinner at the Hong Kong cafe and while waiting for food, I went about cleaning up the health data collected by my iPhone and Apple Watch because they were with my mom, and she walked about the integrated mall while I was undergoing the procedure and in recovery.

So came home at around 2100hrs and I went to eat some sponge cake, took the probiotics, and had my vitamin C drink. Man, I was hungry.

What I shall do for the rest of the night is to catch up on two tv shows, Shooter (TV Series) and Zoo (TV Series)

That’s all for now.

Here I conclude my journal for today.

Daily Journal – Jul 25, 2017

This is my 110th journal.

Woke up around 1000hrs after going to bed at around 0300hrs. Spent the late night, early morning watching Zoo (TV Series).

Lazed around in bed until 1038hrs before getting up. Brushed my teeth and then had a cup of water with a probiotic from Nordic Naturals.

Earlier this month, I bought the Nordic Flora Probiotic Comfort. I decided to buy it after I went through the ingredient list.

So some history on why I took probiotics. Earlier this year, I did some online research of how probiotic could help with my mood and cognitive ability. And so I went to try it. So far, I think the probiotic did help a little bit with my mood swings.

After watching a couple of TV shows, I went to take an afternoon nap from 1430hrs to 1600hrs. Now I’m just thinking whether I want to go out for a quick jog, well, to counteract my lack of activity today.

So I went for a maintenance run/jog of 5 km. Came back and had a long shower. Then proceed to fill up some security clearance form required by my new employer and completed it.

I have noticed that for the past few days, I really didn’t have the motivation to do anything else but just sleeping and being lazy. And I don’t mind going out with friends and if I could I would have stayed out all day. I know I’m supposed to be active and be doing something productive but I’m just not feeling it.

Spent the evening watching Daredevil season 2 and had dinner which consists of fried rice vermicelli noodles, fried squid fillet, seaweed chicken and breaded fried prawns.

That’s all for today.

Here I conclude my journal for today.
